MEP calls for Northern Ireland shale gas ban.
Monday 14 November 2011
A Northern Ireland MEP has called for a moratorium on shale gas in the province. Earlier this year the Executive granted licences for exploration, though it is understood no drilling has so far taken place. The controversial process involves drilling down into the layer of shale and causing small explosions in order to release the natural gas. In the USA shale gas or fracking has become a major source of energy. But many environmental campaigners are deeply critical. Northern Ireland MEP, Bairbre de Brún, believes that there should be stronger Europe-wide regulations on shale gas extraction and she has asked the European Commission to investigate. But she says in Northern Ireland we should be focusing on renewable technology.
