Cambs man “would be alive” if tighter EU rules existed, claims MEP.

A Cambridgeshire man would still be alive if the EU had tougher rules to protect patients – that’s according to an East of England MEP. The European Parliament has called for proposals to be drawn up for a new law on healthcare professionals working abroad. In what Richard Howitt describes as a “huge loophole” it is possible for a doctor struck off in one country to practice in another. According to the Labour Euro MP, German authorities already had concerns about Doctor Daniel Ubani before he worked in the UK. David Gray from Cambridgeshire died when Doctor Ubani accidentally gave him an overdose of the painkiller diamorphine. Richard Howitt says if a new EU law follows the European Parliament’s recommendations, it will make a vital difference.
